SINGAPORE: My aunt Amy Chia had been attempting to locate her long-lost relatives in China for months, but her investigation was moving slowly.
The 49-year-old Singaporean was working on a screenplay that was partially based on her family in Singapore and her relatives in China, while also pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing part-time.
However, decades had passed since her father or relatives had visited her grandparents’ hometown.
She only knew the stories her grandparents had told her, which stated that they had originated in the Shantou city in a village known as “Lau Kai.” However, she was unable to locate this on Google Maps. Another weapon she had was the name “Chia Chun Nan,” which belonged to her granduncle, but it did not lead to anything.
Amy had often considered looking for her ancestors, but her plans never came to pass because she was preoccupied with work and didn’t know where to begin.
I decided to really search only in the last couple of years because I was going to work on my script, and that kind of became a vehicle for me to solidify all the plans,” the woman stated.
