TOKYO: According to local media, Japanese police were looking for the assailant who fatally stabbed a junior high school student and injured another at a McDonald’s restaurant Sunday, December 15.

The youngsters were in line to order at 8.30pm local time on Saturday when the attacker entered the fast-food establishment and wordlessly stabbed them both, according to national network NHK.

The girl passed away after they were taken to the hospital. According to NHK, the youngster who was the second victim lived and told the authorities that he did not know the man who had stabbed them.

The man was still at large on Sunday, and it was unclear if the girl knew him. Television Nishinippon reports that dozens of police officers have been sent to locate the assailant, who is described as a man who looks to be in his 40s and is dressed in dark pants and a grey jacket.

According to local media, the incident in Kitakyushu, in the prefecture of Fukuoka, took place in less than a minute, and at the time, there were about ten patrons inside the restaurant.

Because of its stringent gun control laws, violent crime is uncommon in Japan. However, there are sporadic gunshots and stabbings, including as the 2022 assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe.
