SINGAPORE: On Thursday, September 19, two individuals were charged, one of whom is a Singaporean resident in the United States, with organising a scheme to pilfer and conceal US$230 million in bitcoin.
The United States Department of Justice said in a news release on Thursday that the two are accused of stealing more than 4,100 Bitcoin, which was valued at more than US$230 million at the time, from a victim in Washington, DC.
The FBI detained Jeandiel Serrano, 21, of Los Angeles, and Malone Lam, 20, of Singapore, who reside in both Miami and Los Angeles, on Wednesday night.
According to the press release, Serrano, who goes by the usernames “VesaceGod” and “@SkidStar,” and Lam, who goes by the names “Anne Hathaway” and “$$$,” both appeared in court on Thursday.
Since at least August of this year, Lam, Serrano, and other individuals are said to have plotted to steal cryptocurrencies and then launder it “through exchanges and mixing services.”
