Rescue crews in Nepal started looking for at least sixty-three persons missing early on Saturday, July 13, following a landslide caused by monsoon rains that washed two buses off a highway and into a river.
The vehicles were forced over concrete crash barriers and down a steep embankment, at least 30 metres from the road, by the force of the landslip that occurred on Friday in the central Chitwan district.
Before dusk forced them to abandon the search, dozens of rescuers battled for hours to search the raging Trishuli river, their efforts hindered by muddy waters and strong currents.
Currently, there is no sign of the cars or their occupants. According to Chitwan district chief Indra Dev Yadav, “We will search all possible places,” AFP was informed.
“We will employ all our abilities for search and rescue despite the water levels, current and muddiness.
The buses were carrying at least 66 passengers total, according to district official Khimananda Bhusal, who spoke with AFP on Friday. However, three passengers managed to get off the buses and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
About 100 kilometers west of Kathmandu, on the Narayanghat-Mugling highway, an accident occurred just before dawn.
