SINGAPORE: According to data released Wednesday (Oct 23) by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA), the number of individuals apprehended in possession of or using vapes increased by 52% during the third quarter of this year.
Between July 1 and September 30, 3,840 individuals received fines for using or possessing vapes, an increase from 2,530 during the preceding quarter. Schools and institutions of higher learning (IHLs) referred 743 of the students who were detected vaping during the third quarter. Enforcement efforts around IHLs found an additional 44 cases.
While 16 cases were discovered at checkpoints, 591 cases were discovered during community enforcement operations. To “ramp up efforts to tackle the vaping problem,” MOH and HSA stated that they are collaborating with the Ministry of Education and the Health Promotion Board (HPB).
Additionally, they are collaborating with the National Parks Board, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), and the National Environment Agency to “intensify enforcement on multiple fronts,” which includes internet platforms, checkpoints, the community, schools, and IHLs.
