BEIJING: After heavy rain battered central China in late July, search and rescue operations resulted in the confirmation of at least 50 deaths on Monday, August 19, according to official media.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, fifteen more people are still unaccounted for in Zixing city, located in the Hunan province of China. All administrative villages within Zixing City’s affected areas now have preliminary access to water, power, communication, and roads.
Last month, authorities in eastern China halted public transport and evacuated close to 300,000 people. China has seen extreme weather this summer, with much of the north suffering through multiple heat waves and the east and south seeing a lot of rain.
Last month, a highway bridge collapsed in the northern province of Shaanxi due to heavy rain, leaving at least 38 people dead.China is the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases that are driving climate change and making extreme weather more frequent and intense.
