BEIJING: As incidences of some respiratory ailments are predicted to increase over the winter, China’s diseases control body announced on Friday, December 27, that it was testing a monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin.
In contrast to the lack of readiness five years ago when the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19 first surfaced, creating a specialized system is intended to assist authorities in putting procedures in place to deal with unknown viruses.
According to a news conference cited by state broadcaster CCTV, the National Disease Control and Preventive Administration would set up a process for laboratories to report and for disease control and preventive organizations to confirm and manage cases.
An official statement issued on Thursday revealed that overall infections for the week of December 16–22 increased, according to data for acute respiratory disorders.
During the press briefing, Kan Biao, another official, stated that China is expected to see many respiratory infectious diseases in the winter and spring. He predicted that there would be fewer cases this year than last year, but he did not elaborate.
Pathogens suchas the rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus have been found in recent cases; the number of human metapneumovirus cases among those under 14 is on the rise, particularly in northern regions.
