Beijing: China announced on Wednesday, September 25, that it had successfully carried out an uncommon intercontinental ballistic missile launch into the Pacific Ocean. This development is expected to cause worldwide alarm on China’s nuclear build-up.
The Chinese defence ministry said in a statement that the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) carrying a dummy warhead was launched by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Rocket Force on Wednesday at 8:44 am Beijing time (00:44 GMT) and “fell into expected sea areas.” It was a “routine arrangement in our annual training plan,” the ministry added, and it was not directed at any nation or target.
A different Xinhua story stated that China “informed the countries concerned in advance,” but it did not specify the missile’s trajectory or the precise location in the “high seas of the Pacific Ocean” where it fell.
The explosion “effectively tested the performance of weapons and equipment and the training level of the troops, and achieved the expected goal,” according to Xinhua.
According to a Japan Coast Guard officer, China issued a navigation warning on Monday regarding “space debris” in three areas of the South China Sea and the Pacific, which are located north of Luzon Island in the Philippines, as well as in the South Pacific on Wednesday.
