SINGAPORE: On Monday, September 16, corruption allegations against the director of a construction company and a senior estate manager for the Housing and Development Board (HDB) were dropped. In September of last year, one corruption charge was brought against HDB manager Tan Siam Chua, 61, and Liong Construction director Liong Ah Chye, 62.
On Monday, both men received a discharge that amounted to an acquittal. This implies that they won’t be prosecuted for the same offence twice. Mr Tan was charged with encouraging Mr Liong to provide a fraudulent quotation to deceive the Housing Board.
Tang Shangwei and Ms Dorcas Ong from WongPartnership, Mr Liong’s solicitors, contended that the quote provided to HDB was “genuine and legitimate”. According to the defence attorneys, Liong Construction was “ready and willing to perform the said job.
In a statement, Mr. Liong expressed his satisfaction that the issue had been resolved. “My choice to fight the charges from the beginning has been validated by the acquittal,” he continued. This is because I have never given a false quotation, I have never done anything wrong, and my conscience has always been clear.
