MANILA: Assailed for having ties to Chinese criminal organisations, a former mayor of the Philippines went on the run and was apprehended in Indonesia, according to a statement released by Manila’s justice ministry on Wednesday, September 4.
The Philippine Senate is looking for Alice Guo, also known as Chinese national Guo Hua Ping, because she turned down a congressional investigation into her possible criminal connections. She maintains that she is a natural-born citizen of the Philippines and has refuted the “malicious accusations.”
The Philippines’ Justice Department said in the statement, “This development has been verified by our counterparts in Immigration, who have confirmed that Ms. Guo is currently in the custody of the Indonesian Police at Jatanras Mabes Polri.
According to the department, Guo was taken into custody just after midnight on Tuesday in Tangerang City, Jakarta, Indonesia.
Last month, the Department of Justice received joint money laundering complaints against Guo and 35 others from Philippine law enforcement agencies, including the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC).
According to the Philippine anti-crime agency, Guo, who was removed from her position as mayor of Bamban town in Tarlac province, left the nation in July and used her Philippine passport to travel to Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia before returning to her home country in August
