SINGAPORE: On Thursday, September 12, the National Stadium hosted the first papal mass to be held in Singapore since 1986, drawing an estimated 50,000 attendees.
At 430 p.m., Pope Francis arrived and drove a white buggie around the stadium, blessing infants and children and handing out rosaries to everyone he encountered.
The pontiff gave the homily at the mass after arriving in Singapore on Wednesday afternoon. At the mass were Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam, Minister for Culture, Community, and Youth Edwin Tong, and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his wife, Ms. Loo Tze Lui.
Speaking to CNA after the mass, Mr Jason Lim, who works in sales, said he was touched by the way Pope Francis patiently made his way around the stadium, spending time with the people personally. The 50-year-old said, “I’ve always wanted to attend a mass with a pope, so this mass fulfilled a bucket list wish of mine.
