SEOUL: As the followers of the ousted leader gathered outside his home on Wednesday, January 1, South Korean detectives announced that they would carry out an arrest order for Yoon Suk Yeol by the deadline on January 6.
Advocates and critics of Yoon, who was removed from office by lawmakers for trying to undermine civilian governance last month, have set up camp outside the complex where he has been hiding for weeks, resisting attempts by investigators to speak with him.
After Yoon failed to appear for interrogation a third time, the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) requested the warrant; however, it has been unclear if they could carry it out because the Presidential Security Service has previously refused to comply with search warrants.
According to CIO chief Oh Dong-woon, the warrant will be executed “within the deadline” on Monday, as he stated on Wednesday. We are working to mobilize police and staff in advance, but we also hope for a seamless process free of significant disruptions,” he told reporters.
Additionally, he cautioned that anyone attempting to prevent Yoon’s arrest may be prosecuted. To thwart the execution of our arrest warrant, we view measures like erecting different barricades and shutting iron gates as an obstruction of official responsibilities,” he stated.
