TOKYO: Japan filed a protest with China on Saturday, August 31, after one of its naval survey vessels entered Japanese waters. This was China’s second incursion into Japanese territory in less than a week.
Tokyo is concerned as a result of an increase in Chinese military activity in the vicinity of Taiwan and close to Japan in recent years. In response, Japan has increased defence spending, claiming this is done to prevent Beijing from utilising force to further its territorial claims in the area.
The ship was discovered two hours after it was spotted off the southwest coast of Japan’s Kagoshima Prefecture at about six in the morning (singapore time).
In a statement, the foreign ministry mentioned the first airspace incursion by a Chinese military plane on Monday. It stated that Tokyo had expressed its “strong concern and protest over this incident” to a representative of the Chinese embassy.
Tokyo declared Monday’s infraction of its airspace to be “utterly unacceptable” earlier this week to Chinese diplomats. According to national broadcaster NHK, the incident on Saturday marked the tenth time in the previous year that a Chinese naval survey ship had passed through Japanese territorial waters; this time, submarines and other intelligence-gathering vessels were also present.
