MARSEILLE: The men’s final on Thursday, August 8, has been postponed, so Singaporean world champion kite foiler Maximilian Maeder will have to wait longer to try to win an Olympic medal.
In the first and only race of the day, the 17-year-old placed second out of six competitors. The lack of wind caused the remaining races to be postponed until Friday. Toni Vodisek, the overall race leader, finished fourth in that single race, Italy’s Riccardo Pianosi finished third, and Austria’s Valentin Bontus took first place.
Nevertheless, Vodisek, who won the first series, started with two race victories and only needed one more to win gold.As the winning semi-finalists, Bontus and Pianosi required three race wins apiece to win gold, while Maeder entered the final having won one already.
After Thursday’s results, Vodisek remains in the lead, with Maeder and Bontus now tied for the single race victory.Maeder had automatically advanced to the final after finishing second overall in the opening series.
For competitors to win gold in the final, they must win three races. But with two race wins to start and only one more to secure gold, Vodisek, who won the opening series, had the advantage.
