SINGAPORE: At 95, Mr. Wee Cho Yaw, the former CEO and chairman of Singapore bank UOB, passed away.

Before retiring from the board in 2018, Mr. Wee led UOB Group for over 60 years, making him one of Southeast Asia’s most successful businessmen.

Mr. Wee was described by UOB as a “visionary banker, celebrated businessman, and community pillar” who was “pivotal to UOB’s development as a leading bank in Asia” when the bank made its announcement of his passing on Saturday, February 3.

Singtel’s UOB ranks third in terms of market capitalization. After retiring from the board, Mr. Wee continued serving as its Chairman Emeritus and Honorary Adviser.

A child of the Sino-Japanese war, Mr. Wee was born in Kinmen in 1930 and later relocated to Singapore.

He joined the United Chinese Bank board at 28, making him the youngest director since his father Wee Kheng Chiang co-founded the bank in 1935.
