SINGAPORE: According to political observers, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong made important and radical policy announcements during his first National Day Rally, moving closer to the renewed social compact that was promised during the Forward Singapore exercise.
On Sunday, August 18, Mr. Wong, who became Singapore’s fourth leader on May 15, gave the speech at the rally. The National Day Rally is considered the most significant political speech of the year.
Observers noted that by sharing personal experiences, Mr. Wong came across as relatable—a strategy that would appeal to a younger generation of Singaporeans who were primarily born after independence.
According to Dr. Leong Chan-Hoong, senior fellow and director of the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies’ social cohesion research program, “it was less of him talking to you as the PM, and more of him talking to you as a fellow citizen.”
He was being more relatable at different points in his speech, particularly when he mentioned that despite attending a neighbourhood school, he turned out okay. It will have greater resonance for the younger generation.
