JAKARTA: In an attempt to strike a balance with global powers on his first international journey, Indonesia’s new president left for China on Friday, November 8, at the beginning of a five-nation tour that may include a meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump.
The 73-year-old former general Prabowo Subianto, who took office last month, promised to maintain Jakarta’s long-standing non-aligned foreign policy while elevating the city’s international profile.
Prabowo stated before leaving that he will first fly to Beijing, where he is anticipated to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and then travel to Washington at the invitation of US President Joe Biden.
He said that before concluding in Britain, where he will meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the journey will include stops in Brazil for the G20 conference of major economies and Peru for the APEC summit.
According to broadcaster Kompas TV, Prabowo stated, “I think this shows how highly Indonesia is regarded and how important it is to invite Indonesia to participate in bilateral and multilateral meetings.
