SINGAPORE: After Rachael “Raygun” Gunn took the stage, break dancing, which made its debut at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, quickly gained international attention.
Regretfully, both the Australian and the sport’s governing bodies found this was due to her kangaroo-themed routine’s inability to win over judges and the internet public.
Around the world, people made fun of and ridiculed Gunn’s moves, with many wondering how she had qualified for the Olympics in the first place.
The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) president, who is in charge of breaking, likened Gunn’s performance to that of a performer who picks the incorrect song to sing at a concert, in an interview with CNA this week. The ability and intent were there, but the performance itself simply did not resonate with the audience as envisaged,” stated Shawn Tay.
Gunn previously stated, “The conspiracy theories were just terrible. It wasn’t just people who didn’t understand breaking and were upset with my performance, which was upsetting.
