SINGAPORE: The number of people using a free shuttle bus service for residents of Marine Parade varies greatly; at some times, there are almost no passengers on various routes, while at other times, there are more than 20.
A representative for the grassroots Marine Parade organisers told CNA that the service has experienced “steady usage across most routes” in response to their questions.
However, the program will be improved in response to resident input and ridership statistics. According to the spokeswoman, schedules or routes can change before the year is out.
On July 8, the service was introduced to residents of Marine Parade GRC, MacPherson SMC, and Mountbatten SMC as part of a one-year test program. After almost three months, CNA reporters visited four of the seven routes available to locals for two weeks to assess the service’s popularity, speaking with passengers to obtain their opinions.
The South East Community Development Council (CDC) provided a one-time grant of S$200,000 to fund the service, which would cost S$1 million (US$776,000) year. The remaining funds were gathered by donations made by the CDC and grassroots organisations involved in the Marine Parade.
