SINGAPORE: You might not be aware that, like millions of other electronic devices, your computer and mobile phone are powered by a tiny disc-shaped wafer if you read this article on one of them.
Singapore, where many of these chips are produced, seeks to grow. To draw in additional leading semiconductor companies and capitalize on the artificial intelligence trend, government industrial planner JTC revealed to CNA that it is setting aside 11% more land in Singapore’s wafer fabrication parks.
With over 18,000 workers, the semiconductor industry produces nearly 20% of all goods produced nationwide. Over 20 percent of Singapore’s GDP comes from the manufacturing sector, which is by far the country’s largest industry.
These include the German wafer manufacturer Siltronic and the American chipmaker Micron, which inaugurated an advanced manufacturing facility in Tampines for S$2.9 billion (US$2.16 billion).
Presently, these semiconductor companies are concentrated in four wafer fabrication parks covering an area of 374 hectares, which is equivalent to more than 500 football fields. JTC is the master planner and land developer for these parks, which are located in Pasir Ris, Tampines, Woodlands, and the North Coast.
