MEULABOH: Indonesian officials rescued at least 69 Rohingya migrants who had been at sea for weeks and were being taken to land on Thursday (March 21) after their boat capsized the day before.

The refugee group’s wooden boat and another vessel attempting to assist them both sank on Wednesday, with survivors estimating that approximately 150 Rohingya were on board, with scores swept away.

Rescuers rushed to save the Rohingya after spotting them in the water, stranded and clutching onto an upturned boat off the coast of western Aceh province.

The Rohingya, who are primarily Muslim, face severe persecution in Myanmar, and many risk their lives every year on lengthy and expensive sea crossings, often on frail boats, to reach Malaysia or Indonesia.
