SINGAPORE: Tan Su Shan, a seasoned banker, will become the first female CEO of DBS, the biggest bank in Singapore, when she assumes the position.
56-year-old Ms. Tan currently leads DBS’s institutional banking group. When Mr. Piyush Gupta, 64, retires in March 2025 after serving as CEO for 15 years, she will assume the top position.
As it announced the leadership change on Wednesday, August 7, DBS stated that Ms. Tan brings “solid credentials” to her new role.
The bank went on, “Her appointment is the culmination of a decade-long succession process,” adding that all internal and external candidates were judged weaker than the Singaporean.
Mr. Gupta characterised his successor as having “great customer skills” and a “fantastic business instinct” during a media briefing. He added that she gets along well with team members and has operational experience in everything from technology to consumer banking and wealth management.
Ms. Tan studied politics, philosophy, and economics at Oxford University, where she earned a Master of Arts degree.
Before joining DBS in 2010, she worked for more than ten years at Morgan Stanley and Citi, where she spent the first three years developing the bank’s wealth management division.
