SINGAPORE: Just weeks before he planned to carry out a terror assault in the Housing Board heartlands, a 17-year-old Singaporean who had become self-radicalized was arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA).
The Internal Security Department (ISD) said in a news release on Friday, October 18, that the student was a “staunch” follower of Islamic State who intended to use a pair of scissors from his house or a kitchen knife as his weapon.
Five self-radicalized adolescents who intended to use such readily available weaponry to carry out attacks in Singapore have been apprehended by ISD since 2020. The department claimed that such attacks could be carried out with minimal planning or time.
It further stated that the young man in this instance was committed to carrying out his plan and was less than a month away from doing so when he was apprehended in August.
During the September school vacations, he intended to attack non-Muslim men in the vicinity of Tampines West Community Centre. After his arrest, the boy was also given a two-year jail order in September.
