SINGAPORE: Every year, a large number of Singapore students travel abroad to study, drawn by the appeal of a new environment and prospects for independence and self-development.
However, what is often a simple application procedure for Singaporeans has been hampered by some uncertainty in the last year. Some nations, especially those popular with Singaporean students, are tightening visa requirements for those travelling abroad to further their education.
At the beginning of the year, the UK attempted to reduce the number of immigrants by prohibiting postgraduate students who were not pursuing research studies from bringing dependents with them.
In January, Canada announced a two-year ban on study permit applications in an effort to temporarily reduce the number of international students entering on its borders. Compared to their international peers, Singaporeans typically make up a small proportion of foreign students overseas, but reverberations have been felt by those in the industry.
