PARIS: On Monday, August 5, the second day of the Olympic kitefoiling opening series was significantly delayed due to light winds. Maximilian Maeder, the world champion from Singapore, topped the standings after just one race.
Maeder, new to the games, has earned 11 net points from five races in the first series. He is ahead of Austria’s Valentin Bontus (12) and Slovenia’s Toni Vodisek (11). Maeder had begun the day in third place at the Marseille Marina, level with Bontus and two net points behind Vodisek.
But he finished third in the only race of the day. Bonus finished in fourth place, and Vlodisek in tenth. Four races were originally planned, but poor weather only allowed for one. Before the medals are contested on Thursday, the opening series for kite-foilers consists of up to sixteen fleet races.
In the first series, points are given according to an athlete’s finishing position using a low-point system similar to sailing. For instance, a winner of a race receives one point.
The top two move directly to the final, while the third to tenth kitefoilers compete in two semi-finals for the remaining final spots. The winner of each semi-final moves on.
