SINGAPORE: Three Singaporean volunteers in Cairo to assist with humanitarian efforts in Gaza characterized their mission as one of privilege and responsibility.
They traveled to Egypt last week as part of a Singapore Red Cross (SRC) delegation. In its ongoing aid efforts for Gaza, the organization is sending volunteer civilians for the first time.
While assisting the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), volunteers packaged hundreds of packages full of staple foods such rice, pasta, wheat, salt, oil, tuna, tomato paste, biscuits, and jam. After that, trucks were used to deliver these packages to Gaza.
In addition, the team went out and bought supplies for the food packets, which should last more than 9,000 people five to seven days.
It was a “very sobering” experience for the crew, team leader Nadim van der Ros told CNA from Cairo just before they left for Singapore on Monday, April 29. One family can survive on one pack for a week. We were able to stuff 500 of these packs, so if you calculate the impact, it comes in near to 2,000 people.
For two other volunteers – Mr Don Chow and Ms Tracy Koh – their mission in the Middle East has taught them many lessons.
