SINGAPORE: Companies most affected by the oil spill worry that they won’t be able to survive the three-month break and possibly drawn-out compensation procedure.
Other impacted companies are shifting their activities to encompass areas that are not impacted by the oil spill, which occurred two weeks ago at Pasir Panjang Terminal when a dredger struck a stationary bunker vessel and burst an oil tank.
At a press conference on Monday, June 24, the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, stated that the cleanup process may take three months, following which the impacted areas will be gradually opened. She said that areas that weren’t as severely damaged could open sooner.
The owner of a water sports company near East Coast Park stated that the current situation reminds him of the time his company had to close its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s similar to COVID… the only businesses impacted are those along the coast,” stated Mr. Ho Kah Soon, the director of Constant Wind Sea Sports Centre.
Since the oil spill on June 14, his company, which offers courses in sailing and windsurfing, has halted all sea sports. According to him, the company cannot risk its patrons entering the sea before the authorities declare the water safe.
We don’t want to risk anything by being too open. We’ll be responsible if someone becomes ill,” he declared. “We’ll close for an additional week and monitor the situation.
