BEIJING: According to comments made public on Sunday (Jun 9), Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong stated that the US presents the biggest security threat in the South China Sea because of its military presence there, which is transforming the region into “the whirlpool of an arms race”.
A potential flashpoint between Washington and Beijing is the highly strategic South China Sea, as seen by recent maritime run-ins between China and the Philippines, an ally of the United States under treaty.
After attending a high-level meeting on East Asian cooperation in Laos, Sun stated in remarks released by his ministry that the largest security threat facing the South China Sea at the moment is external.
Sun claimed that US-backed forces were “promoting military deployment and actions in the South China Sea, inciting and intensifying maritime disputes and contradictions, and damaging the legitimate rights and interests of coastal countries” .
According to Sun, the United States’ decision to station medium-range missile systems in the region “is dragging the region into the whirlpool of an arms race, placing the entire Asia Pacific region under the shadow of geopolitical conflicts”
