KUALA LUMPUR: Meta Platforms has restored Malaysian media’s Facebook posts about Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s meeting with a Hamas leader this week, claiming that the removal was an error.
Malaysia’s government, which has been a strong advocate for Palestine and has expressed displeasure with the removal, has threatened to take legal action against Meta and other social media companies if they continue to censor pro-Palestinian content on their platforms.
On Monday, May 13, Anwar met Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, in Qatar. Subsequently, he emphasised that despite his positive relationships with the group’s political leaders, he was not part of its military apparatus.
Anwar had never before met with Haniyeh in person as Malaysia’s prime minister.
Anwar has met the head of Hamas twice. The most recent meeting took place in 2020 during Haniyeh’s visit to Malaysia. They met again in 2019.
Muslim-dominated Malaysia had written to Meta, requesting an explanation for removing posts about the meeting from two media outlets and the closure of the Malaysia Gazette, a third outlet that covers Palestinian issues, from its Facebook page last month.
