PARIS: After four races, world champion Maximilian Maeder of Singapore started his Olympic career with mixed results on Sunday, August 4. He currently sits third overall in the fleet.
After four races in the opening series, Olympic newcomer Maeder accumulated eight net points at the Marseille Marina. He is behind Valentin Bontus of Austria (eight) and Toni Vodisek of Slovenia (six).
In his first race, Maeder placed fifth, won the second, finished second in the third, and did not finish the fourth.
The opening series for kite-foilers runs from Saturday through Wednesday, with up to sixteen fleet races, followed by a medal competition on Thursday.
In the first series, points are given according to an athlete’s finishing position using a low-point system similar to sailing. For instance, a winner of a race receives one point.
The top two advance straight to the championship round, with the remaining final spots up for grabs between the third and tenth-place kitefoilers in two semi-finals. Every semifinal winner advances. To win gold in the final, competitors must win three races. But with two victories going into the final, the top kitefoiler from the first series will only need one more to win gold.
