Singapore: The People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) anti-corruption campaign in China has become even more fascinating.
Defense Minister Dong Jun publicly appeared on Thursday, December 5, more than a week after media outlets revealed that he was the subject of disciplinary proceedings. That same day, official media reported President Xi Jinping called on the military to “fight corruption” during a PLA event.
However, experts tell CNA that neither his return nor that of his former boss Miao Hua, a member of the highest-ranking Central Military Commission (CMC), who has been placed on leave due to a disciplinary investigation, completely allays speculation about their futures.
According to some, the most recent events also cast doubt on Mr. Xi’s hold on power within the PLA and the CCP, the military’s preparedness for a possible conflict across the Taiwan Strait, and its capacity to maintain its course toward more ambitious long-term objectives of military modernization.
Given that his two predecessors, Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe, were both ousted for “serious violations of discipline,” a notorious euphemism for corruption, Mr. Dong’s purported collapse received a lot of attention. International media sources extensively covered it.
