SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday, July 5, that Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong had written to Keir Starmer expressing his congratulations on being appointed as the prime minister of Britain.
After winning Friday’s general election, Mr. Starmer’s center-left Labour Party easily took over, bringing an end to Rishi Sunak’s party’s 14 years of right-wing Conservative rule.
In a letter of congratulations to his counterpart, Mr. Wong wrote, “I extend my warmest congratulations on Labour’s strong showing at the UK general election and your appointment as prime minister.”
“Your premiership comes at a time of significant global challenges, and the British people have placed their trust in your leadership by giving you a strong mandate to guide the country through these challenging times.”
He mentioned the “ties dating back over two centuries” between Singapore and the UK.
Mr. Wong continued, “Both nations enjoy a warm and deep friendship that is supported by strong people-to-people ties and robust cooperation across a wide range of sectors.”
