BANGKOK: Former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, imprisoned for six months, was recently given parole. The prime minister highlighted Shinawatra’s national service in his remarks on Tuesday, February 13.
The politically significant billionaire, who spent 15 years living overseas in self-exile to avoid going to jail for a conflict of interest, is maybe the most well-known prime minister in Thailand. He made a spectacular return home.
Soon after, the king reduced Thaksin’s eight-year prison sentence to one year. The 74-year-old did not spend a single night in prison during that time; instead, he spent six months in hospital confinement due to an undisclosed health problem.
The official word is that he was granted parole. The Shinawatra family’s ally and fellow tycoon, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, told reporters that it was compliant with the rules of the prisons department.
