SINGAPORE: On Tuesday, July 9, Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone will arrive in Singapore for the first time as an official visitor.
In December 2023, due to health issues, Mr. Siphandone was named prime minister following the resignation of Phankham Viphavanh, the previous leader of the nation.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Monday, his visit to Singapore honours the 50th anniversary of the founding of the two nations’ diplomatic relations.
At Parliament House, Mr. Siphandone will be greeted ceremoniously and meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Along with Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, he will also meet Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Lawrence Wong, who will throw an official lunch in his honor
The official luncheon will mark the unveiling of the 50th-anniversary logo for Singapore-Laos diplomatic relations by the two prime ministers.
According to MFA, Mr. Wong and Mr. Siphandone will also be present when Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) about carbon credits and cooperation in education are signed between Singapore and Laos.
