SINGAPORE: It’s been almost a year since the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) announced in July of last year that then-Transport Minister S Iswaran was assisting with investigating a case discovered by the agency.
Several people were stunned at the time. The case sparked significant public interest, which continues to this day. It is uncommon for a Cabinet minister in Singapore to be linked to corruption.
In January of this year, Iswaran was charged with 27 counts, the majority of which involved receiving items worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from Mr Ong Beng Seng, most notably related to Formula One’s Singapore Grand Prix.
In March, he was charged with eight additional counts for obtaining items from Mr Lum Kok Seng, the managing director of Lum Chang Holdings, including bottles of whisky, golf clubs, and a Brompton bicycle.
The prosecution had proposed that the eight charges from his dealings with Mr Lum be heard first, followed by the 27 charges against Mr Ong. Iswaran has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
