SINGAPORE: China has surpassed its current high-speed trains, which are already among the fastest in the world, with a prototype of its next-generation commercial bullet train that can reach test speeds of 450 km/h. The China State Railway Group announced the CR450 high-speed train, which has a maximum commercial operating speed of 400 km/h, in a statement posted on its official WeChat account on Sunday, December 29.
According to China Railway, the formal launch of the fastest high-speed train in the world represents a significant advancement in the CR450 project, which got underway in 2018. It will “further consolidate and expand” China’s aspirations for high-speed railways around the world. With a top speed of 430 km/h, the Shanghai maglev is the fastest commercial train service in the world and connects downtown Shanghai to Pudong International Airport.
The peak operating speed of the CR Fuxing bullet trains and CR Harmony trains, two other high-speed Chinese tracks that link major cities, is 350 km/h.
In contrast, European high-speed rails, such as Germany’s ICE 3 trains, have a top speed of 350 km/h, comparable to their Chinese counterparts, while Japan’s renowned Shinkansen bullet trains can reach up to 320 km/h. Chinese official media have hailed China Railway’s most recent prototype as “ushering in a new era of high-speed rail.
