On Sunday (May 26), Chinese Premier Li Qiang agreed with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to launch a diplomatic and security dialogue and resume free trade talks. He also discussed tensions surrounding Taiwan with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
The leaders met bilaterally in Seoul the day before the three Asian neighbors’ first summit in more than four years.
China and the US-allied South Korea and Japan are attempting to manage rising distrust amid Beijing-Washington rivalry and tensions over Taiwan.
Yoon told Li that South Korea and China should collaborate not only to promote shared interests founded on mutual respect but also on regional and global issues to address common challenges, citing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas conflict, and international economic uncertainties.
I hope to continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation even in today’s global complex crises,” Yoon stated at the beginning of the meeting, according to his office.
Yoon urged China to play a more active role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, particularly as North Korea continues to develop nuclear missiles and strengthens military cooperation with Russia, claiming that another spy satellite launch using intercontinental ballistic missile technology is imminent.
