SINGAPORE: On Monday, December 30, a former human resources sales representative was sentenced to one year and two weeks in prison for defrauding a client out of S$31,020 (US$22,850) to hire employees.
The 29-year-old Lim Yi Xiang entered a guilty plea to two counts of cheating and one count of absconding. While being investigated for his cheating offenses, he had skipped bail. According to the court, Lim was employed by the HR company Weistum Advisory as a sales sub-agent before the latter filed a police investigation against him.
Sales sub-agents were responsible for seeking clients and introducing Weistum’s HR services. The sub-agent would obtain the customer’s signature on a contract that Weistum’s director would create if the client were interested. In 2019, the director of a trade company posted an online ad seeking to hire four employees, to which Lim replied. Lim informed the director that he could help him find four employees and secure two government subsidies for the business.
According to Lim, Weistum would create the course materials for the new hires under the Career Trial grant, and the director only needed to review the materials’ contents to qualify for a S$28,800 award.
