SINGAPORE: When China’s most important annual political sessions conclude on Monday (March 11), Premier Li Qiang will not address the media. Since 1993, the premier’s news conference has capped the two sessions, giving international journalists a rare opportunity to question one of China’s senior leaders.
The premier is usually rated second or third in the CCP’s Politburo Standing Committee.
In addition, the press event provides the outside world with insight into the leader’s priorities and personality.
However, three decades of tradition have been upended with Monday’s revelation that the meet-the-press session will be discontinued this year and presumably until 2027.
While the move surprised many, it is just the latest in a long line of precedent-breaking moves under President Xi Jinping’s leadership since he took power in China in 2012.
