In an April 12 video, four young guys can be seen at a VivoCity pick-up location beside a blue ComfortDelGro taxi, according to the Singapore road safety Facebook page SG Road Vigilante. One of them leaps into the boot of the taxi, while the other closes the boot before settling into the front passenger seat. Two of them are seen climbing into the taxi.
A ComfortDelGro representative responded to questions from The Straits Times by saying, “We are aware of the video circulating online showing a passenger in a taxi’s boot.Passenger safety is our top priority, and riding in the boot is dangerous and strictly prohibited,” the spokesperson continued.
“We are looking into this event and will take the necessary steps to make sure that safety rules are followed. We implore every customer to buckle up and only sit in the specified areas of the cab.
Since then, the Facebook video has gained over 140 comments and over 39,000 views. While some internet users believed the driver was not aware that someone had entered the boot, others thought the event should be investigated by the police. According to the road traffic rules in Singapore, the driver and every passenger of a motor vehicle “shall wear a body-restraining seat belt or a lap belt where such a seat belt or lap belt is available for use”. When queried, the Land Transport Authority said it was looking into the matter. ST has contacted the Traffic Police for comment.
