SINGAPORE: The government will reimburse people and companies that were incorrectly assessed the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for payments made to six government departments, to the tune of at least S$7.5 million (US$5.6 million).
Beginning in March, the following agencies will begin issuing refunds: the Singapore Food Agency, Land Transport Authority, Urban Redevelopment Authority, Housing and Development Board (HDB), Office of the Public Guardian, and Council for Estate Agencies.
“Inconsistencies in the application of GST on certain government fees” were found last November during an internal examination, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) announced on Wednesday, February 14. When the review was finished in January, it was discovered that six agencies’ worth of costs had been incorrectly charged with GST.
The concerned ministries and agencies issued an apology in a press release.
“The incorrect GST charge is apologized for by MOF and the six agencies. As of right now, all authorities have stopped levying GST on the relevant fees, according to Second Permanent Secretary for Finance Ms. Lai Wei Lin.
