SINGAPORE: After being accused of money laundering and misusing business finances, Indonesia’s “perfect husband,” as he is referred to by online users, was taken into custody and prosecuted.
On March 27, officials detained businessman Harvey Moeis, 38, on suspicion of stealing US$26 billion from a state-owned mining firm. According to the Jakarta Globe, Ketut Sumedana, the head of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) Legal Information Center, stated that 173 witnesses had been questioned about the matter.
Among these witnesses is Sandra Dewi, Harvey’s forty-year-old wife, an actress, businesswoman, and brand ambassador.
Local media reports state that she is being investigated after the anti-corruption organization filed a complaint with the authorities regarding Harvey’s numerous bank accounts. The complaint claimed Harvey might have gotten money from dubious sources connected to her husband’s business endeavors.
Harvey may get a maximum sentence of life in prison if found guilty. If Ms. Sandra is found guilty, she can be sentenced to up to five years in prison or fined one billion rupiah (US$61,757).
The well-known pair, renowned for leading opulent lives, are involved in what may be Indonesia’s worst corruption case, with possible losses to the state of 271 trillion rupiah. The AGO revealed the corruption case at the end of March, naming 16 suspects from the state-owned tin mining business PT Timah and the private sector.
