SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced on Tuesday (Apr 16) that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will remain a Senior Minister in the Cabinet following his resignation as the head of state, but there won’t be any immediate changes to the other cabinet members.
A day after the leadership transfer date was announced, Mr. Wong, the incoming prime minister of Singapore, informed reporters that the specifics of a Cabinet reshuffle would be revealed a few days before the swearing-in ceremony on May 15.
The foundation of our system is both progressive change and continuity. He stated, “It has never happened that all the senior ministers leave simultaneously when there is a leadership change.
Instead, they let the younger ones take the lead by continuing to contribute in their unique ways. So when I take over, I’ll use the same strategy.”
The Finance Minister, Mr. Wong, expressed his satisfaction that Mr. Lee has decided to continue serving as a Senior Minister in the Cabinet. Following their resignations, former prime ministers Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong held the position of Senior Minister.
