TOKYO: On Monday (Aug 26), the defence ministry announced that Japan had dispatched fighter jets in response to a Chinese military aircraft that “violated” Japanese airspace.
The ministry said in a statement that a Chinese aircraft was “confirmed to have violated the territorial airspace off the Danjo Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture” and that it had “launched fighter jets on an emergency basis.
According to the ministry, the “Y-9 intelligence-gathering” aircraft spent about two minutes in Japanese airspace at 11:29 a.m.
The Japan Self-defence Forces were said to have taken action, including “issuing warnings” to the aircraft. NHK, the public broadcaster, stated that no weaponry, including flare guns, was utilised as a warning.
According to the Ministry of Defence, this was the first time a Chinese military aircraft had entered Japanese airspace. The ministry said that the government had strongly objected to Beijing through diplomatic channels.
According to the Japanese foreign ministry, a senior official at the Chinese embassy in Tokyo was called by Vice Foreign Minister Masataka Okano to protest the incursion and vehemently demand that such breaches not be allowed to happen again.
