SINGAPORE: Road safety and penalties for reckless driving will be the focus of the next parliament session on Tuesday (May 7), with more than ten questions filed. The move to require all employers to have a process for employees to request flexible work arrangements will also be discussed ahead of tripartite guidelines that go into effect in December.
The parliamentary questions on road safety stem from public concern over several recent multi-vehicle accidents, including one in Tampines that killed two people. On April 22, a 17-year-old Temasek Junior College student and a 57-year-old pest control company employee died in an accident at Tampines Avenue 1 and Avenue 4.
A 42-year-old Saab driver was charged with four counts related to the incident. Muhammad Syafie Ismail is charged with one count each of dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving, and failure to stop after an accident. All are subject to the Road Traffic Act.
Mr Saktiandi Supaat (PAP-Bishan-Toa-Payoh) inquired about how the Land Transport Authority (LTA) can prevent similar accidents in high-traffic areas and how accident risks can be reduced through road design and traffic management.
He also inquired as to the number of fatal accidents caused by reckless driving and speeding in the previous five years, as well as whether existing penalties under the Road Traffic Act should be reviewed.
