SEOUL: According to a statement released by Yoon’s office on Thursday (Jul 11), South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida agreed to continue their security cooperation despite their shared concerns over the strengthening ties between North Korea and Russia. The two leaders met on Wednesday at the fringes of the NATO summit in Washington, which they are attending for the third year running.
According to a statement from his office, Yoon stated that there is a security risk for both East Asia and the world due to the military and economic ties between North Korea and Russia.
Yoon went on to say that the growing ties between Pyongyang and Moscow highlight the importance of the trilateral summit held last year at Camp David between US President Joe Biden, Japanese President Kishida, and other leaders, wherein they decided to strengthen military and economic cooperation.
Yoon has worked to restore relations with Tokyo since taking office in 2022, but these efforts have been hampered by historical disagreements arising from Japan’s occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945. In a recent interview with Reuters, Yoon cautioned Russia over its strengthening military ties with North Korea.
