Singaporean art will be displayed in a few locations when the renowned Venice Biennale opens to the public on Saturday, April 20.
Robert Zhao Renhui, a local artist, is showcasing his work at the Singapore Pavilion to promote the nation. Furthermore, the primary exhibition of the biennale features, for the first time ever, artworks from the National Gallery Singapore (NGS). Eight pieces from the NGS collection will be on display in the expansive exhibition Stranieri Ovunque Foreigners Everywhere, curated by this year’s biennale curator Adriano Pedrosa and featuring 331 artists.
With the most outstanding public collection of modern Southeast Asian art, the NGS has loaned pieces by eight well-known regional artists, including Indonesia’s Affandi and Hendra Gunawan and Singapore’s Georgette Chen and Chua Mia Tee. The pieces, all portraits, are on display at the Nucleo Storico area.
Singapore has participated in the 60th edition of the biennale for the eleventh time this year. The occasion ends on November 24. Known as the “Olympics of the art world,” the Venice Biennale is held every two years and features contemporary art displays in the expansive Giardini and Arsenale grounds. Several international artists participate. According to NGS Chief Executive Officer Eugene Tan, the museum’s involvement this year will highlight artists and artwork from Singapore and Southeast Asia and foster “crucial dialogues.
The 60th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, features paintings from the collection of National Gallery Singapore, which it shows with pride. These eight portraits, together with artists mostly from the Global South, will contribute to a more comprehensive knowledge of Southeast Asian modern art in a global context.
