KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court set the date for Najib Razak’s hearing, which was closed to the public and media on Wednesday, April 17. This means that the imprisoned former prime minister of Malaysia will not be able to move forward with his request to serve the balance of his sentence under house arrest until June 5.
Najib is attempting to force the government to produce an amendment order that was purportedly given by Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah of Pahang, the former king of Malaysia, allowing him to serve the remainder of his term at home. Najib has been imprisoned for corruption offenses since August 23, 2022. As the cornerstone of their argument, Najib’s attorneys have presented an affidavit from a “crucial” witness, stating that it validates Najib’s assertion that there was an addition.
Due to “certain material” revealed in the most recent affidavit that is “apparently sensitive,” Najib’s attorneys asked that the case be heard in chambers, which means it would not be accessible to the public or the media, at the beginning of the Wednesday hearing. The government’s attorneys concurred with this request. The plea was approved by Justice Amarjeet Singh, who also stated that he would make his ruling public.
The document, signed by Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and dated April 9, has been viewed by CNA. It was available to the public on the court’s website. CNA contacted senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan, representing the Attorney-General in this case, to confirm if a sealing order had been issued.
