SINGAPORE: The National Heritage Board (NHB) of Singapore said on Tuesday, November 5, that the country and Malaysia will jointly nominate the Chingay procession for inclusion in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
According to NHB, the street parade, which takes place in Singapore, Penang, and Johor Bahru, symbolises Malaysia’s common heritage.
In 2025, Singapore and Malaysia will celebrate their 60th bilateral anniversary, and this joint nomination offers a chance for them to foster cross-cultural cooperation and exchanges,” the board continued.
NHB discovered that Chingay was among Singaporeans’ top picks for the next UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage nominations during public consultations conducted in 2021 and 2022. According to NHB, this was due to the parade’s “multicultural nature and familiarity to Singaporeans. ”
The results are anticipated to be revealed around the end of 2026, with Singapore and Malaysia hoping to submit their Chingay nominations in March 2025. UNESCO created the list in 2008 and includes components of several nations’ intangible cultural heritage.
