SINGAPORE: The Transformative Justice Collective (TJC), an activist group that opposes the death penalty, has received a Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) order for the second time in less than a week.
On Sunday, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated that the disciplinary instruction relates to posts made by TJC on Facebook, Instagram, and X on August 6.
The posts, according to MHA, falsely claim that the state “uses capital punishment to arbitrarily decide whether people live or die” and that the executions of two Singaporean death row inmates on August 2 and August 7, 2024, were “scheduled without regard for due legal process”.
These two claims are untrue, as an article on the government fact-checking website Factually explains in more detail. TJC has posted the necessary rectification messages on each of the three social media networks.
The group received a POFMA order earlier this week regarding content related to the treatment of death row inmates. TJC posted similar correction notices on the relevant platforms.
A targeted correction instruction regarding a post made by a “Julie O’Connor” on August 6 was also sent to LinkedIn by MHA on Sunday. This means that LinkedIn must legally add a notice opposing the original post along with a link to the government’s explanation.
